DINABANDHU BARIK
Prime Minister Research fellow
Department of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati

My fascination with organic chemistry blossomed during my postgraduate studies, where I was captivated by the elegance and versatility of carbon-based compounds. Through rigorous coursework and hands-on laboratory experiences, I gained a deep appreciation for the pivotal role of organic chemistry in addressing complex societal challenges, from drug discovery to sustainable organic synthesis. Moreover, my research endeavors allowed me to explore the synthesis and characterization of novel organic molecules, providing invaluable insights into the intricacies of molecular design and reactivity. In July 2022 I joined as a research scholar under the supervision of Prof. Bhisma Kumar Patel on the field of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. In September 2023, I was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister's Research Fellowship that encouraged me to ameliorate my research work

My current research work is focused on  visible-light mediated organic synthesis of sulfur containing precursors of biologically active molecules which show antibacterial, antimycotic, and anticancer properties. Out of my research, I enjoy teaching Organic Chemistry graduate and undergraduate enthusiastic students.

Research Interest

One area of particular interest is the development of novel photocatalysts capable of harnessing visible light to facilitate key bond-forming reactions. By harnessing the unique reactivity of excited state photocatalysts, I aim to explore new strategies for the activation of inert chemical bonds and the selective functionalization of organic substrates. Furthermore, I am intrigued by the potential of visible light-mediated processes to enable sustainable and atom-economical transformations. By exploiting the mild reaction conditions afforded by photo redox catalysis, I aim to develop greener and more efficient synthetic routes that minimize waste generation and reliance on hazardous reagents. This commitment to sustainability aligns with my broader research goals of advancing the principles of green chemistry and promoting the development of environmentally friendly synthetic methodologies.
